The Royal Exchange is on the hunt for aspiring new talent to be part of The Truth About Youth Showcase.

Platform one is being run as part of Truth about Youth at the Royal Exchange Theatre. Truth about Youth is a major new initiative sponsored the Co-operative Foundation, which challenges and changes negative perceptions about young people by supporting projects which enable them to work with adults, the media and the wider community.

As part of Truth about Youth (see notes for editors), Manchester’s Royal Exchange has launched Platform one – a showcase designed to enable young performers across Greater Manchester to show what they can do and share their work with a public audience.

For one night only this summer, The Studio and Great Hall will host seven new performance pieces and performers are asked to submit their work before the deadline, Tuesday 24 May 2011.

The Exchange is looking for home-grown theatre, multimedia, spoken word, music, dance and performance that crosses boundaries, that is diverse, inventive and exciting, but more importantly, created by young people using their own ideas.

Speaking about this exciting opportunity, Truth about Youth Co-ordinator Bridget Floyer says:

“Platform one is an opportunity for young people across Greater Manchester to show how creative and imaginative they can be, and for audiences to celebrate and recognise their achievements. We are looking for work that has been created by young people using their own ideas, and hope to create an exciting, eclectic evening of live performance. This will also provide an opportunity for those who are successful to join the Truth about Youth creative teams who will be working on the 2012 Truth about Youth Festival.”

Anyone aged 14 – 21 from across Greater Manchester can apply to be part of Platform one, either as an individual, or as part of a group. On Friday 6 May, 5.30pm – 7.00pm the Education Lounge will host a Platform one drop-in session for people wishing to find out more, gain advice and take a look at the two venues involved.

Go to www.royalexchange.co.uk/platformone for more information and an application form.

Platform one will take place in The Studio and Great Hall of the Royal Exchange Theatre on Friday 29 July, 5.30pm – 7.00pm. All applications will be looked at by a panel of Royal Exchange staff and young representatives from the Truth about Youth programme, and shortlisted applicants will be invited to the Theatre to chat about their piece. Final selection will be made by Monday 6 June 2011.
