The Birmingham Royal Ballet’s stunning production of Aladdin tells the timeless classic tale taken from the stories of the Arabian Nights. The Lowry, Lyric Theatre welcomes the UK premiere of Aladdin; originally created back in 2008 for the National Ballet of Japan.
This magical and comedic production boasts a talented and skilled company of ballet dancers choreographed by David Bintley. Combined with the excellent musical score by Carl Davis, famed composer for television programmes such as The World at War, Cranford and Pride and Prejudice this production is funny, enchanting and dramatic.
The Arabian tale begins with mischievous Aladdin pursued by a group of palace guards in the local market square. Saved by a mysterious Magician, the Mahgrib, who diverts the guard’s attention Aladdin is persuaded to perform a task for him. Foolishly, Aladdin agrees and descends into a dark cave to retrieve an old lamp.
The cruel Mahgrib tricks Aladdin and leaves him locked deep in the dark cave. When Aladdin rubs the lamp to light the cave it reveals a Genie who can grant wishes. Aladdin goes on an adventure to friendship, wealth and love.
As the story unfolds the performance develops and gets better and better. Aladdin is supported by a brilliant company of ballet dancers and an excellent orchestra. Jamie Bond (Aladdin) and Jenna Roberts (Princess Badr al-Budur) routines together were sublime and truly romantic. Alongside Mathias Dingman’s outstanding ballet skills and Iain Mackay’s dastardly Mahgrib, who was the epitome of an evil villain, this production was a joy from start to finish. The large set and costumes were excellent and added to the Arabian theme.
