Richard Ashcroft has delighted Manchester music fans by announcing a huge homecoming gig for next summer.
The Verve frontman will play at Robin Park in Wigan on Saturday 20 July, 2024, marking his first hometown show in over 25 years. Due to phenomenal demand, a second night has been added, on Sunday 21 July.
The long-awaited date is the first time the Drugs Don’t Work singer will take to the stage in his hometown since The Verve played to thousands at Haigh Woodland Park in 1998.
The two-time Ivor Novello winner has been a regular on the festival circuit in recent years, including a headline slot at Neighbourhood Festival in Warrington in 2019 and more recently playing Tramlines Festival this year. He also supported rock legends The Who in August.
Ashcroft rose to prominence with band The Verve when they released the era-defining record Urban Hymns, which went on to become the UK’s 18th biggest-selling album of all-time. It spawned anthems including Bittersweet Symphony and Lucky Man.
His most recent album, Acoustic Hymns, was released in 2022, and comprised unplugged versions of tracks from Urban Hymns. It reached number two in the UK Album Charts.
