Okay, a little bit of history and culture for you here on Penang. This tiny little corner of Malaysia has served as a link between Asia’s great kingdoms for hundreds of years, and was an important trade route for Europe, the Middle East, India and China.

As a result, the island has a huge diverse melting pot of cultures, with travellers and settlers all bringing their own traditions, flavours and way of life to the area.

Over the years, the island has bridged the gap between Chinese, Malaysian and even Indian cultures, and as a result, it’s very own unique cuisine has emerged, one which is focused heavily on traditional family recipes and street food, a factor that has allowed Penang to become one of the top culinary destinations in the world.

In fact, they have a saying on the island: “chiak si hock,” which literally means “eating brings in prosperity.” Penangites are extremely proud of their cuisine.

You don’t need to brave extensive COVID restrictions and long flights to get a taste of Penang either, as the fantastic Little Yellow Rice Co. are finally able to host their first Supper Club on Wednesday 7th July.

The Peranakan Supper Club will take you on a tasty journey through Hainanese family favourite dishes, showcasing the flavours of Penang and featuring their signature dish – the Hainanese Chicken Rice.

The dishes are firmly rooted in their family heritage, one which goes right back to owner Hannah-Natalie Hosanee’s great grandfather who, in 1920, travelled from Hainan in China to set up a coffee house in Malaysia.

Tickets are £40 per person and include all six courses and a drink on arrival. It’s BYOB and so the team will be posting booze pairing suggestions on their socials in the run up to the event.
