A new chapter in Manchester’s independent film scene arrives in Stockport on Thursday 12 June 2025, as The Light Cinema plays host to the premiere of Trial, the powerful debut feature from director James Emmanuel Kalu — brother of rising singer and Manchester presenter Victoria Jane.
Behind the lens is James Kalu, who draws on his own journey from academy footballer to storyteller, embedding themes of faith and perseverance into every frame.
Trial follows Jonathan Cissé, a former Everton prospect whose playing career was derailed, forcing him to reinvent himself as a football agent. When one last opportunity beckons, Jonathan stakes everything on a new trial — but as the phone stays silent, he must confront the cost of hope when it’s all you’ve got left.
Despite being self-funded and shot in just a short period of time, Trial boasts striking performances, a heartfelt narrative, and an acting debut from DJ Chaise.
Doors open at 6pm for arrival and seating, with opening remarks at 6:30pm followed by the 2 hour 10 minute screening. After the credits roll, stay for a closing speech and special acknowledgements before the evening wraps at 9:00pm.
If you can’t make the screening but still want to back James’s vision, visit the official GoFundMe page.
