Earlier this week I was invited to dine with MrScruff, John Quilter and Gary McClarnan, 3 people who have together created, accomplished, experimented and then re-imagined the bohemian café. Famed for its specialist loose leaf teas and splendid cakes Teacup celebrates its expansion and continued success this week with the launch of a new evening menu ‘Supper and a Cuppa.’
Available Wednesday to Saturday from 6.30pm the Supper and a Cuppa menu features a selection of comforting treats crafted with Teacup’s usual quirky, quality touch. Each main is £10 for meaty and £8 for veggie. A daily text message and twitter feed will notify people of the days’ options and diners will be able to book by text message. A small but excellent wine list from Hanging Ditch completes the evening service.
After an awe inspiring 10 course taster menu and 2 hours of in depth conversation around the inspirations and techniques behind the dishes I can speak from well versed experience when I say this menu is absolutely fantastic.
The kitchen is headed up by Chef John Farrar whose impressive credentials include working under legendary French Chef Pierre Koffman in London and Jeff Baker, Leeds’ first ever Michelin starred chef. John combines his classic influences with teacup’s quirky, homely qualities to create a comforting mains menu featuring popular dishes - the emphasis here is on attention to detail and the best ingredients.
The new menu is complimented by a small but perfectly formed wine list from Hanging Ditch and includes a 2010 Sabina Temperanillo, Pinot Grigio Rose, a Vermintino Castanya 2010, Brut Marillac Rose Champagne, selected liquers and Estrella Galcia beer.
Commenting on the launch of the new evening service and expansion, Gary McClarnan said:
“It’s been an incredible eighteen months for teacup, we’ve invested in our team, improving service, expanding the dining area and kitchens and now opening most evenings, teacup has really grown up. Although we’ll be serving a wine list and our own style of main meals, we’re mindful of keeping teacup true to its roots and want to reassure people that tea and cake will remain firmly front- of-house. ”
Following further investment Gary and Scruff are actively seeking to expand the brand and are looking to add sites in London and Manchester.
