On Friday 12th August The Deaf Institute, one of Manchester’s most-loved venues, will be turning eight! It’s a venue deeply-engrained in the hearts of music lovers, gaining a reputation as one of the best small venues in the country.
The historic building was originally created in 1878, before being lovingly restored to its former glory. Since then it’s gone on to house huge bands in the early stages of their careers. Over the years we’ve seen the likes of The xx, Warpaint, Drenge, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Metronomy, and many many more grace the stage.
What better way to celebrate than doing what they do best – hosting a night of amazing live music and a stellar roster of DJs. This isn’t your average line-up though: They’ve got two of the city’s best bands going back to their roots for an intimate show.
Since breaking out of the local scene Everything Everything have become one of the best new bands in the country. A group who’ve proven themselves to be one of the most inventive bands in British music, on a never-ending quest to bring creative ambition back to pop music. Their latest record, ‘Get To Heaven’, gatecrashed the Album Charts Top 10 and garnered near-universal acclaim (Q Magazine 5/5, DIY Magazine 5/5, The Telegraph 5/5)/. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to see them back in a small venue.
But that’s not all. They’ve also managed to get Manchester favourites Dutch Uncles on the bill for a double-whammy of awesomeness. The band returned last year with new album, O Shudder, and played their largest headline show to date at The Ritz. They’re a group who manage to alchemise inimitable time-signature mayhem into art-pop perfection. Live, they raise things to another level, with Duncan’s idiosyncratic dance moves coming to the fore and members swapping instruments mid-song, so don’t miss it up close and personal in the music hall.
Things begin with the long-awaited live return of leftfield electronic producer DNCN after a 7 year hiatus! DNCN is the alias and original project of Silverclub frontman Duncan Jones. He’ll be providing a set which promises a return to his experimental roots, fuelled by hard-hitting beats and dark textures. BBC 6 Music’s champion of cutting-edge music Mark Riley will be DJing too!
As if that isn’t enough they’ve got an amalgamation of their newest and best club nights and DJs before, during, and after the live show. They’ve got YOU DIG? – The coolest new addition, fusing rare funk, soul, and disco cuts. Their flagship night, GIRLS ON FILM will get you on your feet with the finest ‘80s smash hits! Nongi brings fresh sounds from the dusty streets of her hometown BOPHELONG, plus some awesome world music. SO FLUTE bring modern house and techno, and long-time Deaf Institute faves DOODLE, who have been throwing parties in the basement for two years, share the decks with PICCADILLY RECORDS DJs. It’ll be the greatest party the basement has ever seen. Plus regular SPOTI-FRIDAY continues in the main bar, so you can get your requests in too!
