Friday night sees a particularly eclectic bass and beats night tackle two techno heavyweights. Needless to say then, we’ve got ringside seats for this one.
His first production, circa 2002, arrived on Erick Morillo’s label, Subliminal. Meanwhile, his DJing teeth were cut as resident at notorious Leeds haunt Back II Basics, when it still had a huge national presence. Two facts that should impress, but may also give you a misleading aural impression of Paul Woolford.
Because his sound couldn’t really be categorised as ‘house’ back then, as those names imply, and has remained in a state of flux for over a decade now. At different points informed by electro, breakbeat, and- more recently- bass and techno, although nodding to numerous electronic fashions his output has always remained wholly original.
With that in mind his name on the bill for Selective Hearing at South tomorrow night- Friday March 1st- has us rather excited. As does the second booking scheduled for the evening; two Swedish guys who boast far less eclectic a shared oeuvre, but prove beyond doubt that if you do something well it’s a wise idea to keep doing it whenever the opportunity arises.
Skudge- AKA Elias Landberg and Gustaf Wallnerstrom- will no doubt be familiar to many, not least fans of solid techno rhythms, who often count them as latter day heroes. Agree or disagree, they have been responsible for some fantastic driving dancefloor stuff since 2009. With that in mind our advice is to head down early, because on top of everything we’ve already mentioned this event also marks the party’s third anniversary, making for quite the celebratory arrival of spring… Even the weather looks to be getting involved… Full details below these clips.
