Grey Lantern are delighted to present the live return of former Oceansize vocalist and guitarist Vennart and new Superball signing Charlie Barnes.
Following the dissolution of the late great Oceansize in 2011, Mike Vennart has been touring the world as a live member of Biffy Clyro; however the itch to return to his own songwriting has never left him. Having released two EPs as British Theatre with fellow ex-Oceansize member Richard ‘Gambler’ Ingram, Vennart’s debut solo album The Demon Joke has been funded via PledgeMusic and will come out on Superball Music later this year; written and recorded with the help of former bandmates Gambler and Steve Durose, it promises to be a startling reminder of why Vennart has long been heralded as one of the great underrated songwriters of his generation, balancing chaos with clarity, positing melody against discordance in the same majestic way he always has.
If you believe that certain things are simply ‘meant to be’, then the coming together of Superball Music singer and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Barnes must’ve been concocted in the cosmos light years ago. For both parties, Mancunian progressive rock heavyweights Oceansize and Amplifier have been hugely influential to their chosen paths, and where Superball ultimately signed both groups, so Barnes has gone onto work with the latter as a live and occasional studio collaborator, before hiring Steve Durose – a man synonymous in his guitar work for both bands – to produce his debut LP, More Stately Mansions. From songs like ‘Sing To God’s’ gossamer strings and histrionic guitar malevolence, to ‘Macbeth, MacBeth, MacBeth’ rise and fall on a series of scything post-metal riff acrobatics, it is an album that unashamedly deals in broad brush strokes.
