I must admit that even I have started taking an interest in house plants since lockdown began. Usually I only ever care for my office cactus (which is doing amazingly well) but I’ve now started to get involved in everything.

So we spoke to local Ancoats favourites Northern Lights so they could give us a little bit of advice on how best to look after our green little friends.

They’re also starting a house plant delivery service very soon – so keep an eye out for that…

MONSTERA
‘Cheese Plant’

This plant only needs watering about once a week and is the perfect house plant! It’s a staff favourite.

This plant prefers a warm climate and away from direct sunlight.

When watering this plant allow the top 4cm of soil to dry out between watering.

The leaves may turn yellow and get root rot, or wilting leaves if over watered.

To keep this plant healthy, try and keep away from artificial heating and cold places, it may also need a monthly feed of fertilizer.

DRACAENA – TRIFASCIATA
‘Mother-in-Law Tongue’ // ‘Snake Plant’

The perfect beginner’s plant, this one doesn’t require much maintenance and only needs to be watered about once a month.

The dracaena is fine in low light, but if you want this plant to grow and get bigger – give it more sunshine and light.

This plant is often sold as a low-light plant, but strives with better light, this is why restaurants, doctors, offices etc. love this plant.

The reason for the name ‘Snake Plant’ is because of the shape of the leaves, it also known as Viper’s Bowstring Hemp.

The perfect beginner’s plant, this one doesn’t require much maintenance and only needs to be watered about once a month.

SEADUM MORGANIANNUM
‘Burro’s Tail’

Native Southern Mexico and Honduras, these succulents make excellent hanging house plants for your home.

The Burro’s Tails are pretty forgiving plants, usually preferring to sit in partial sun or bright shade.

This hanging plant only needs to be watered once a week.

“Remember its far easier to bring a dry plant back to life that an over-watered one.”
