Sometimes amazing things are born out of the worst possible situations. Take Loaf MCR, for example. Renowned across the city and wider region for contemporary twists on traditional baked treats, the business launched in the midst of the biggest crisis to beset the country since World War II, the pandemic, and quickly earned a name for itself supplying some of the city’s best businesses. Since going on to open in central Manchester and neighbouring areas — starting at Salford’s Affinity Living development — the site on landmark Oxford Street shows just how well this local startup is doing.

The secret recipe behind the winning formula is clear. Loaf MCR isn’t just about appealing to sweet teeth, but playing with and riffing on nostalgia for a time when Manchester looked very different from today. Flavours including Jammie Dodgers, Angel Delight, Manchester Tart, and Fab Ice Lolly are among those available, all giving pretty strong nods to the past but looking absolutely 21st Century, with only the best ingredients going into each bake. Other temptations on the menu include Pink Panther, Lotus Biscoff, and Lemon Meringue.

Perfectly matched with iconic pink interior design, walking into Loaf MCR’s Oxford Street store feels like discovering a dessert paradise. And believe us when we say you won’t want to leave. In addition to the trademark loafs, visitors can find homemade retro style milkshakes, iced and speciality coffees, tasty toasties and an abundance of other delicacies like handmade bagels and baguettes. There’s also an expertly selected range of locally sourced and packaged provisions and drinks, courtesy of Store Supply. Oh, and it’s worth noting these loaf cakes are now sold in other outlets, such as Selfridges at the Trafford Centre, and the team have worked with major brands like BBC and Vimto. How’s that for a word-of-mouth recommendation?
