Worsley feels like you’ve stepped out of the vast sprawl of Britain’s second largest urban area and into a historic vision of rural England. More country village than anything else, this far-western Salford suburb has been rising through the ranks of the region’s des-res neighbourhoods thanks to its lush green spaces and leafy streets. Worsley Old Hall, an historic food-focused pub which enjoys a stunning waterside spot, is one of the gastronomic highlights in the area. The fact it’s also one of the most prominent heritage landmarks only adds to the reasons you shouldn’t miss it out.

With its white timber-framed exterior and expansive grounds, Worsley Old Hall is about as statement as they come. Opinions and timelines differ, but it’s believed the existing structure was completed in the early-17th Century, although there has been extensive remodelling and redesigning at various points since then. The result is a fascinating country hall destination which boasts a number of rooms, corners, nooks and crannies that you’d only really find at an address of this stature and of this age. Always buzzing, it’s a great punt for a relaxing drink or longer meal plucked from a menu of contemporary British cuisine with some more exotic dishes thrown into the mix, too.

Starters & nibbles, for example, might include carrot & ginger soup, chicken liver pâte, shredded lamb shoulder tart, tempura mackerel tacos, and sticky bang bang pork. Mains, meanwhile, range from smoked salmon linguine and tomato and mozzarella gnocchi, to fish pie, steak burger, Buttercross Farm pork and leek sausages, and a succulent bacon chop. If you prefer a little less on your plate, you’ll also find light bites such as the salmon and smoked haddock fishcake or spring vegetable risotto. Ideal if you want to save some space for puddings & cheese, whether that’s Cheshire Farm Ice Cream or hot waffle and caramelised banana, triple chocolate brownie or raspberry ripple Arctic slice; Caerphilly, brie, Kidderton Ash goats cheese or a classic barbers vintage cheddar.
