What: Selfridges has been one of the greatest shopping institutions in the UK over the past century, with a reputation that transcends our shores. It is a luxury retail store, specialising in designer fashion brands, cosmetics, fragrance, home ware, technology and giftware. Famous for it’s use of educational and scientific exhibits to attract customers, also for its stunning architecture and window displays, customers are promised a fun shopping experience.
The Manchester store opened on Exchange Square in 2002, following the success of the Trafford store which opened in 1998. Each of it’s five floors were designed by a different architect, giving them a contrasting look and feel. In December 2000 it was announced that the store is to undergo a £40 million renovation to give it a more iconic look that has come to resemble the Selfridges chain. It has been said that the store will feature art installations using LED lighting that will be projected onto the outside of the building at night.
Throughout the store you will find everything from designer fashion and evening wear to fragrance and cosmetics, fine food and drink, home wear, gifts and retro sweets to scorpion vodka lollies! The ground floor is particularly good for small gifts for different occasions, with concessions such as Vom Fass, who sell unique, personalised liqueurs, cooking oils and vinegars.
Selfridges has a history of bold art initiatives when it comes to window designs. The windows constantly attract tourists, designers and fashionistas alive to marvel at the current designs and styling.
