I think it’s safe to say that RUM is IN at the moment. Gin has had its heyday now – and rum is coming through with a dazzling array of small-batch distillers entering into the fray.

The city is now home to a brand new rum – and not only is their blend uniquely distinctive, but buying it will ensure that something goes back to the people of Manchester with the brand donating a quarter of profits to great causes!

The Public Spirit is the brainchild of a couple, Olly & Naomi, based in Ancoats, who came up with the idea during the first lockdown wanting to bring people together to enjoy great drinks and to help others out at the same time. Furlough and eventually redundancy then gave them the time to find their rum – a highly unique blend of both English & Spanish style rums which is pretty rare.

The couple personally handpicked rums from 5 different locations – Barbados, Jamaica, Panama, Trinidad and Venezuela – giving The Public Spirit the best of both worlds; with English-style ‘RUM’ tending to be relatively heavy in body, rich in flavour and strong in aroma, while Spanish-style ‘RON’ is typically lighter in body and perfect for cocktails.

Available as an Original Spiced Rum and a Golden Aged Rum, The Public Spirit is bold, rich and complex – expertly crafted in small batches to ensure the highest quality imaginable. While the Golden Aged Rum is the blend in its most natural form, the Original Spiced Rum has the addition of creamy salted toffee and spices.

Over the last couple of weeks, Olly and Naomi have been working closely with Ancoats’ favourite The Jane Eyre, developing a series of serves and cocktails that utilise the unique taste of The Public Spirit. There’s even talk of a rum-based Espresso Martini which I’m sure you’ll all get excited about!

What’s more, The Public Spirit have decided to give something back to the city’s most vulnerable, by giving a quarter of their profits to great causes, and also £2.50 from every bottle sold through their website will go to the Manchester Central Foodbank to support struggling families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

……………………………..

You can order your bottles of The Public Spirit through their website, with bottles priced at £33 (Original Spiced Rum) and £35 (Golden Aged Rum). You should also expect to see the spirit in bars and restaurants across the city when they’re all allowed to re-open.
