It’s somehow July, already, and the hospitality openings show no signs of slowing down. We’ve got beloved coffee hatches expanding into their own brick-and-mortar (don’t they grow up fast?) to overhauls of hidden NQ drinking dens, to an entirely new offering from one of our favourite ramen places.
Bring on July, then.
APT Disco – Open 4 July
The hidden bar above Thomas Street’s Cane & Grain has a new identity – APT Disco. Gone are the tiki bar vibes, and in comes the NYC loft look. Expect long drinks like Harvey Wallbangers and June Bugs at not-too-eyewatering prices, and DJs every weekend. It’s open late, like 3am late too.

Duke Street Coffee – Open 1 July
It’s all happening around Castlefield Bowl these days – from constant new food and drink openings around St John, and all sorts of cultural goings on at Aviva Studios. The latest addition is Duke St Coffee, a specialty coffee spot specialising in all the best matchas and hojica, a premium green tea. Fancy brew fans, make a mental note.

Hikari Koffee – Open soon
Having built a loyal following serving out of the front of a hatch in a Didsbury barber shop, Hikari Koffee are moving into their own premises, also in Didsbury. Everything here is about precision and thoughtfulness, with a mind-boggling range of expertly picked beans, and scientific brew methods for perfect drinks. Costa coffee, it is not.

Loafi Bakehouse – Open soon
Taking over a tiny former restaurant in lovely Ramsbottom is Loafi Bakehouse. It’ll be a ‘micro-bakery and kitchen’, and a great addition to Rammy’s buzzing independent food and drink scene.
Loom & Ladle – Open now
Located inside the Marriott Manchester Hotel, Loom & Ladle are all about comforting classics with a bit of cheffy flair. On the menu are dishes like potato hash, Lancashire cheese and onion pie and beef brisket with creamed corn. Homely cooking right in the city centre.

Moose Coffee Media City – Open soon
With an appreciation for all things American breakfast culture – huge pancake stacks, more types of eggs Benny than you can shake an antler at, and bacon on everything – Moose Coffee is a bit of a city centre institution. Now you can enjoy all the good stuff when you’re in Media City too.
Nagomi Cloud Bakery – Open 17 July
By popular demand, the ramen geniuses behind Hakkapo are opening a bakery dedicated to the most creative of Japanese and Hong Kong-style sweet treats. The treats in question include perfectly golden French toast topped with black sesame sauce, Japanese milk bread with a dan dan butter and loads of and other satisfying treats. Is there anything they can’t do?
Toast by Winsome – Open now
Those talented people behind Winsome have been running the bar in the pretty Whitworth Locke atrium for a little while now, now it has its own identity – Toast. Spearheaded by cocktail master Tom Fastiggi you might remember him from his tenure at Schofield’s), it’s a classy affair, and an excellent addition to the city’s cocktail scene.

RPB + Coffee – Open now
With a couple of spots in the Northern Quarter, trendy, industrial chic barbers Ross Parlane (RPB to those in the know) are venturing out to the suburbs. Prestwich is their new location, and there’s a very nice little coffee shop attached too. ‘A vibe’, as they say.

Sandbar Withington
Legendary art school haunt Sandbar has, after over 30 years in business, opened a second location. It’s in another student hotspot, Withington, in the stunning building which was until quite recently the suburb’s Almost Famous. The neon and graffiti is gone, the glitter ball, classroom furniture and thing crispy pizza is in. All hail Sandbar 2.0.
