Established in 1982 in a former Victorian fish market, Manchester’s space for craft, community and making celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
Manchester Craft and Design Centre showcases an exhibitions programme that promotes and celebrates local, regional and national craft talent.
Visitors can learn new skills at regular craft workshops in jewellery, ceramics and print making alongside free family craft workshops in the school holidays. They also support creative careers by working with education and community partners, and their subsidised professional development programme.
To mark this special 40th anniversary, the Centre will be holding a celebration event on Saturday 14th May from 11am – 3pm.
The FREE event will include live music, food & drink and craft activities alongside an interactive exhibition where you can share your memories, craft something yourself and see how the Centre has evolved since 1982.
Manchester String Quartet will be performing two sets of Manchester classics alongside some 80s favourites from 12.30pm – 1.15pm & 1.30pm – 2.15pm.
The Centre will be open from 10am – 5.30pm with free craft activities from 11am – 3pm.

At the forefront of the regeneration of the Northern Quarter (in fact the area was named in our building!), it has played a leading role in nurturing craft skills and independent businesses for forty years.
Alongside celebrating the Centre’s history, this year we face forward by inviting local communities and Manchester residents to share their ideas for the Centre’s future. We have a refreshed vision for a greener and more diverse craft sector that serves our communities’ needs and would love to hear your views.”
