Hulme’s Garden Centre is a hub for community engagement through gardening. But for the past three years, it’s also been the site of Green Island Festival – a 500-capacity festival celebrating local music and independent food traders.

The three-part series of day festivals and afterparties returns for 2023, with a line-up encompassing genre-spanning live music, vocalists, DJs and spoken word performers – it places underground, underrepresented, emerging artists from across the UK, and global sounds at the forefront.

Headline acts are BCUC, a ferocious seven-piece from Soweto, South Africa, Mim Suleiman, and Electric Jalaba. Other acts include Galivantes, a rowdy ska eight-piece, alt-rapper Charlie Boy Manson alongside rapper and vocalist Francs, Sham Steele and Meduulla – a spoken word artist and rapper who featured in the 2021 season of BBC’s Rap Game – and queer nightlife icon, DJ, and founder of RebeccaNeverBecky collective, Mix Stress, as well as Abnormal Sleepz, Prido and The Beautiful Sinners, plus more.

There’s a main stage, forest stage, and third stage which will present a rotation of takeovers by BBC Introducing, the legendary North West DJ and producer Ruf Dug with ‘Ruffy’s Lab’, and Northern Lights Home in collaboration with The Garden.

Manchester’s food scene is represented with pop-up stalls from Japanese fusion dumpling and kimchi masters Midori Didsbury, and vegan delights such as oyster mushroom wings and banana blossom ‘fish’ tacos from Boneless Bridgade. With Seven Bro7hers as the official sponsors there’ll be plenty of speciality ales on tap too.
