Planning application for a brand-new modern supermarket in the heart of the city’s Chinatown have been accepted this week, and it look like work has begun in earnest to bring Blue Whale Supermarket to Manchester.

It promises to be a 5,500 sq ft high-end “Oriental grocery experience“, offering up fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, and likely all of the weird and wonderful foods and drinks from the other side of the world.

One of the greatest pleasures in life is getting on holiday and immediately heading to the supermarket to see what they’ve got on offer, and it seems like you’ll be able to do the same at home when Blue Whale opens up. Expect a vast selection of products from China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and further afield.

Blue Whale Oriental Supermarket will also feature a large 60 cover sushi restaurant inside – Aka Sushi – of which almost nothing at all is known about. It should definitely be decent though – using the super-fresh ingredients from the supermarket and doing something mega with it all.

Past experience tells us that restaurants hidden inside supermarkets are typically amazing – so this is something we will definitely be keeping an eye on.

Keep your ears and eyes close to the ground for developments over the coming weeks.
