Manchester loves a food hall, from the European-inspired buzz of Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor to the boozy good times of Society and New Century. Most recently, another huge food hall has been announced for the St John’s District in the city centre.
Salford has so far missed out on the action but that’s set to change as a new food hall is given the green light for a spot on Bury New Road near Broughton.
A former car repair centre is set to be transformed into a 10-stall food hall and shisha bar. The venture, which is called BNR Foodhall on the sketches that appear alongside the planning application, comes from Millson Group, whose previous design work work includes Mission Mars’ lively German-themed eating and drinking spot Albert’s Schloss. Together with the Al-Mehdi Group and Five Star Tasty Foods Ltd, they plan to redevelop the long-vacant Lexus garage into a communal dining destination.
The food hall will be on the corner of Appian Way and Bury New Road, next to a Tim Horton’s and down the road from McDonald’s drive-thru. It’s not an area known as a food and drink destination but it would be great to see BNR Foodhall bring together some independent businesses under one stylishly designed roof and making it a place people travel in to visit as well as somewhere exciting for the local community.
According to the planning application, the food hall will provide “a family friendly environment where different world foods can be sampled and enjoyed in a single location”. It will incorporate around 10 food stalls and an open plan dining space with the capacity for around 200 diners. There will also be a small children’s play area. Plans go on to say the shisha bar will be upstairs on the first floor, separate from the communal dining area and appropriately ventilated so as not to affect those eating downstairs.
The developers plan to improve the exterior of the existing building to improve the street scene. The plans says the exterior of the building “will be clad in a faux timber effect cladding with anthracite panels above. The new entrance canopy and rear of site will be clad in a copper effect cladding”.
Plans were submitted to Salford City Council way back in 2021 and have now been approved.
