One of Manchester’s oldest pubs – which has laid empty since 2018 – is set to re-open.

Renovation work is now underway on a £1.8 million refurbishment of The Shamrock, on Bengal Street, which will reopen early next year under a new name chosen by the public: The Spinners Rest.

The pub traces its origins to 1808 and has long held a place in local history. In 2019 it was acquired by the family-run Joseph Holt brewery.

After delays caused by the pandemic, Joseph Holt has now kicked off a comprehensive renovation. The new name is intended to pay tribute to the mill workers who once lived and worked in the area.

Richard Kershaw, CEO of Joseph Holt, said: “As a family business with deep roots in Manchester, our pubs are very much at the heart of the communities they serve. That’s why we invited the people who matter most – our customers – to help choose a name that reflects the pub’s new chapter.”

The Shamrock has historically been a hub for Manchester’s Irish and Italian communities, particularly in the early 20th century.

The refurbishment ‘will preserve the building’s historic charm’, according to the brewery, preserving much of the building’s historic character, notably because it lies within a conservation area. The project also includes expanding the premises, including one of the few beer gardens available in the locality.

“This is an exciting new chapter for The Shamrock,” added Kershaw. “As it’s reborn as The Spinners Rest, we believe it will become a vibrant and welcoming hub for the Ancoats community — just as it always has been, but with a fresh look towards the future.”
