Sat on Stockport’s burgeoning Little Underbank, Rare Mags is a true haven for book lovers and avid readers alike.

The shop originally opened its doors a bit further up the bank back in 2018, but moved its navy, retro-esque facade to a larger space a couple of years ago, where it now resides for good.

Celebrating four years this year, Rare Mags has continued to provide people of Stockport and beyond with the best in independent magazines and books

They specialise in hard to find and international magazine titles including Apartamento, Courier, Popeye and Gentlewoman along with a range of fiction and non-fiction books from a wide range of independent publishers. The shop also serves coffee and sells stationery and other eccentric items available to purchase alongside the literature.

Speaking of the upcoming birthday celebrations, one half of the duo behind Rare Mags, Holly, said: “We decided, after 2 years of not getting to see people and have a beer together, to keep it simple and have the shop open until 8pm and just give out beers all day!

“Hopefully the weather will stay nice for us and we can just have a proper good celebration of the shop and all of our lovely customers! I’ll be spending the entirety of this week scouring Stockport’s supermarkets for the best stubbies.”

As well as its physical store in Stockport, Rare Mags also has an online shop where you can purchase the majority of its magazines and books, as well as the coffee beans you’ll find instore. They shop internationally, too, meaning that you can always have a slice of Stockport’s very best indie business wherever you are in the world.

Rare Mags joins an abundance of great start-ups that now call Stockport home. It’s a true hub of Northern creativity, with stores such as Top of the Town Vintage, The Plant Shop and SK1 Records, as well as incredible food and drink destinations popping up in the area over the past few years.

We’d highly recommend paying the guys at Where the Light Gets in, Bakers Vaults and Bistro Marc at Winter’s if you’re making the trip anytime soon! The Good Rebel also does some banging cocktails where you’ll no doubt find yourself after a day full of stubbies at Rare Mags.
