Today marks the start of Easter’s four day working week that allows you to eat chocolate for breakfast and spend Friday – Monday hungover, without even having to think about work.
There’s no shortage of things to do in the city this week either – Ramona is celebrating its first birthday, there’s a takeover at Nell’s featuring Lovescene, art and karaoke, and Dua Lipa is even at the AO Arena! It’s a busy one, but we’ve tried our best to highlight some of the events that we think deserve a space in your diary.
Art & Culture
This Wednesday, Maisie Smith is back with her Silver Ring Making Workshop at Thorniley Studios! You’ll explore the basic techniques of creating jewellery including sawing, soldering and shaping to create a 100% recycled sterling silver ring to take home.
Remember when we all took up art in the very first lockdown? Well, Yoshimi Miura was one of the very few that soldiered on with her new hobby, and this Thursday she is showcasing some of her work at her very first exhibition at the Carlton Club in Whalley Range. Her work has developed from her experience of being a Japanese immigrant living in northern England, who’s perspective shines a light on the commonplace and grotesque characters who haunt British popular culture past and present.
Another art event for art novices and masters alike, Life Drawing with HOP is back at Albert Square on Wednesday for an evening of relaxation via drawing. This laid-back arty social is a chance to use your chosen medium to capture the ultimate subject – a real life human being on paper.
Rounding up this week’s art events is the launch of Dirty Faces, a new kind of film studio from Lancashire. On Thursday they will showcase the rawest of mill-town talent, from DJs, artists, filmmakers and fashion heads, to special guest rapper Bill Shakes, all at the infamous Antwerp Mansion.
Food & Drink
Another event on Thursday for the foodies, is the launch of Firefly’s weekly SHINTO Supper Club. For £40 per person, you can grab bottomless drinks and a three course meal inspired by flavours from the Far East. Dishes include tuna, salmon and chicken sushi, as well as skewers of pork belly and tender beef tunske.
You won’t go hungry this week, as Ancoats’ award-winning neighbourhood bar and restaurant, Elnecot’s new menu is also dropping on Thursday! Inspired by fresh British flavours, the menu includes dishes that will no doubt introduce each diner to a brand-new favourite flavour combination. From Crispy Pork Belly to Devilled Eggs and a Rhubarb Trifle, this is one you’ll want to book ASAP!
Events
Tomorrow, Feel Good Club will be playing cupid at the launch of their very own LGBTQ+ speed dating event. Starting with ‘APHRODITE’ for thems, femmes and lesbians – the interactive event will offer an alternative take on traditonal speed dating, featuring games, prizes and unexpected surprises.
This Saturday, spoken word workshop Sayin? is back at Niamos. The event combines singing, rapping, poetry and everything in between to give performers the opportunity to speak their mind and share thoughts to a room of applause. It’s a breeding ground for some of the newest most cutting edge vocal art forms around.
Juno Birch is bringing Attack of the Stunning to Manchester Academy this weekend, too. Expect all of her usual silliness, along with cheesy tracks and loads of big laughs. How else would you want to spend your Saturday night?!
Manchester Pride is hosting another one of its Community Sessions tomorrow, where you’ll get to learn about the incredible work of Biphoria and how you can get involved. The interactive workshop, ‘Visibly Invisible’, will explore bi representation in media and will then be followed by an opportunity to get to know other attendees, alongside some light refreshments.
Music & Clubs
Levy Down Low is back once again with a killer line-up featuring Werkha, Mr Redley and Ellen Beth Abdi. Going until 2.30am at the legendary Talleyrand, this special bank holiday party is sure to get you moving.
Ramona is celebrating its first birthday all weekend, too! Starting on Wednesday all the way through to Sunday, the tequila lovers paradise is serving bottomless margaritas all day every day, and will see some huge DJs including A Guy Called Gerald, See Thru Hands and Gina Breeze bring the party to the tipi!
Manchester’s promoters are presenting a Sounds Of Manchester event this Thursday in order to fundraise for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. For those who want to show their solidarity and help raise money for this international emergency, show up and dance up at Hidden – the line-up features aalice, High Hoops, Luke Daniels, Kiss Me Again and Pangolin.
This Easter Sunday in the city centre you’ll find a bunch of blokes with parkas and Adidas Gazelles on, although it won’t actually BE Oasis – just the UK’s No.1 tribute to them! Definitely Mightbe will be heading to The Liquor Store for a big gig from 7pm. Tickets cost £8 or a tenner on the door.
The last and final party to get you dancing this weekend is Dimitri From Paris’ debut at Joshua Brooks. The French music producer and DJ is known for his disco sets that transcend the dance floor, creating mixes that have also been used on the catwalk of huge fashion houses such as Chanel. Tickets are running low for this, so be quick!
