Back in 1995 The Brown’s went on a quaint little family holiday to a little place called Charnock Richard just near Preston. As far as family holidays went – it was actually pretty good – because this holiday was in a theme park – and it was called Camelot.
It was one of the UK’s most popular attractions throughout the 90s, with its fake Medieval stylings, live jousting matches and selection of pretty good rollercoasters – many of which liked to break, burn and in a couple of cases seriously harm people – adding to the excitement somewhat.
During our holiday we even stayed in the adjoining Camelot hotel, where our room benefit from a very annoying kids Dragon Rollercoaster going past the window every 3 minutes. I also seem to remember a rollercoaster called ‘Tower of Terror‘ which was set around a big fake castle and would sharply skid to a halt right at the end – resulting in minor whiplash and severely bruised vertebrae.
Well, Camelot officially closed their doors back in 2012, which is actually a lot sooner than I thought it was – I was under the impression that it closed back in the early noughties – probably a contributing factor to why it ended up closing. People stopped turning up to the place, attracted instead to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Alton Towers I bet.

Since then the site has remained closed off, derelict and rotting, and you can get a peek inside thanks to a rather adventurous fella on Facebook – The Derelict Explorer. He explores the historic abandoned and derelict buildings in the UK – photographing and documenting everything he finds.

His visit of Camelot is a particularly emotional one for him as, much like myself, he attended the park when he was 15, and “so to wonder aimlessly around this now defunct and derelict theme park was sad to remember walking through the same path as a 15 year old and seeing the demise of what it has now become today.”
