Alicia: The Musical arrives in the city next week, so we spoke to Paul Levin, Creative Producer of Beyond Theatre who are bringing this innovative new production to Manchester.

For the completely uninitiated, Alicia: The Musical might seem a little bit confusing, so Paul is keen to clear things up;

“We’re going to take you to Cornwall in the year 1565, and you’ll meet Alicia, a woman who has grown up in a village where the powerful are shown respect and use fear to command their will on all.”

As you enter the Cathedral, you’ll be immediately thrown into 16th Century village life, a fully immersive experience unlike most conventional theatre you’ve experienced before.

“We don’t have any traditional staging, and there’s no post-show hospitality, we like to use unexpected and unusual venues that are appropriate to the setting of the story, drawing the audience into the production and helping them feel a part of it.”

And feel a part of it you will, as you experience a rock opera unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. A “musical journey that takes Alicia from a world of darkness into a world of light” with everything unfolding around you.

The girl a demon walks alone. She is wearing a long, black traveling cloak.

The production will plunge the audience into the centre of the action as the performers will move around and amongst them, rather than delivering their performances from a static stage in one part of the venue.

Alicia: The Musical features an international cast including Manchester born tenor, Victor Michael and music arranged by one of Manchester’s leading musical directors, Tim A. Duncan.

Looking to build on the pre-COVID success of its last production, an immersive Jesus Christ Superstar, that took place inside Nottingham’s oldest church, Paul believes that people are “now looking for considerably more from a trip to the theatre” and has made Alicia fit this brief.

With the production kicking off in Manchester on Thursday 26th August, the show will go on tour around the UK stopping off in Nottingham on the 30th of September, Birmingham on the 5th and 6th November, before arriving in London’s West End.
