Every district in Manchester has those shops — halfway between landmark, institution and useful local asset. In Chorlton, one of the busiest suburbs in the south of the city, Barbakan Delicatessen fits this bill to the letter. Situated on Manchester Road, a busy thoroughfare packed with bars, restaurants, bike shops, libraries and — on the right days — market stalls, this is every locals go-to for freshly made sandwiches, imported cheeses, luxury meats, natural drinks. And, of course, the ultimate star of any bakery: incredible breads you’ll struggle to find elsewhere in the region.

Established in 1964, Barbakan is about much more than 21st Century trends, and the heritage side of this operation rings true from the moment you set foot inside. More than 75 varieties of bread are made here, from hand-moulded loaves to rolls, not to mention a huge choice of cakes and pastries. Ovens fire up overnight in the traditional way to stock up for the morning, lunchtime and afternoon rush. Many styles and varieties are unusual, even more are truly authentic and have been made here for decades. Needless to say, then, this is one of those spots where you can always get something special and unusual.

Limited seating means some items can be eaten comfortably without the need to leave, and weekends often see pop up additions such as an outdoor grill on the roadside terrace cooking continental sausages and other treats. Meanwhile, intermittent evening events include wine and cheese sessions which are as educational as they are indulgent. If you’re in the area — whether exploring the nearby green spaces such as Chorlton Water Park and the Meadows, or visiting for the abundance of independent shops or watering holes — this is an essential pit stop. If you live close by, you already knew that and are almost definitely a regular by now.
