There’s nothing wrong with Pizza Express per se. Plenty of good things have happened in Pizza Express. Including the chance meeting of Kate and Johanna. Two hopefuls working their way up the infinitely challenging hospitality ladder, the pair became friends over innumerable shifts at the famous chain restaurant and when it was time to move on swore to stay in touch. We should be glad they did, too. After a few years of individual endeavours they wound up at the same business again, and it’s around this time, over a glass of wine, maybe a few more, they decided to set up something for themselves.
Coffee Sack, which claimed Best Cafe and Customer Service in Manchester and the England’s Business Awards 2022, is the fruit of their labour. Suffice to say, then, they’ve never looked back. A thriving cafe in the heart of a truly enticing North Manchester neighbourhood, doors opened in 2017 and quickly won favour beyond Prestwich — already home to a number of other excellent bars, restaurants, bakeries and hangouts. Offering food and, of course, drinks, visitors will also find an on-site shop selling beans and more to take home. Which, if nothing else, shows how serious the coffee is (with a 30 day return policy no less).
As for the food, you can expect a range of breakfast icons spanning cuisines and continents. From Turkish flavours with a kick, to a section of the menu labeled ‘posh eggs’, artisan toast toppers — all bread here is made here, by the team — alongside bagels, sandwiches and soups. If all that sounds a little much, maybe opt for a light bight, which includes British staples like crumpets and healthier choices such as house granola. To top this off, we have to mention the wonderful decor, including amazing window illustrations, and a covered outdoor seating area, which is ideal for summer.
