Few pubs in Manchester carry quite the same affection as The Horse & Jockey. Standing proudly on Chorlton Green for over 200 years, the landmark building has long been a social cornerstone of this South Manchester suburb, from its days as a rustic coaching inn to its role as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Its distinctive black-and-white Tudor frontage, added in 1908, remains instantly recognisable, while recent work has breathed new life into the interiors without compromising an ounce of its character.

In 2025, the team behind Salford’s acclaimed The Black Friar — led by owner Neil Burke and executive chef Ben Chaplin — took on the site in partnership with Manchester brewery Joseph Holt, undertaking a meticulous restoration that returned the venue to its former glory. The renovation reinstated period details such as the original stone-flagged floor, while introducing softer tones, open spaces, cosy nooks and natural textures to create an inviting, modern pub atmosphere rooted in heritage.

The kitchen now champions a confident take on British dining, with Chaplin’s team crafting seasonal menus that celebrate regional produce and hearty, unpretentious cooking. Diners can expect familiar dishes elevated by thoughtful technique and local sourcing — from Chorlton Pale Ale–battered haddock with triple-cooked chips to slow-cooked meats, indulgent toasties and well-balanced vegetarian plates. Sundays are a particular highlight, with a dedicated roast menu offering everything from dry-aged beef and half-spatchcock chicken to a rich mushroom wellington, each served with crisp potatoes, seasonal vegetables and generous helpings of gravy.

At the bar, Joseph Holt’s award-winning ales remain at the heart of things, joined by a well-chosen wine list, freshly mixed cocktails and refined bar snacks. The Horse & Jockey has once again found its rhythm — a place that bridges old and new with ease. With its historic bones, revived spirit and a menu that balances comfort and craft, this much-loved pub feels firmly restored to its rightful place at the heart of Chorlton life.
