It’s hard not to fall in love with Knutsford. Set in the heart of Cheshire, this small market town exudes a traditional, old world charm. The atmosphere pulls you in and wins everyone over from the moment you climb out of the car or step off the train, with direct services running regularly to and from Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston, amongst other destinations. In the nearby area, you’ll find an abundance of amazing countryside walks suited to various fitness levels, not to mention the majestic Tatton Park. One of the North of England’s finest stately homes, the grounds and interior are equally splendid and well worth exploring. Then there’s Linden Stores, another absolute gem in these parts.

Founded and still operated by partners Chris Boustead and Laura Christie, who are occasionally assisted by their son, Ollie. Dad heads things up in the kitchen, while mum focuses her talent on selecting and serving excellent wines which you won’t find in many other places. Both menus and lists emphasise sustainability and responsible sourcing. In terms of food, think small producers providing the vast majority of ingredients which appear on the modern British menu. Then there are the foraged bits, found in nearby woodlands and meadows, which also play an important role in the recipes.

When it comes to drinks, the choices are dominated by independent wineries and breweries, and there’s a leaning into the more unusual. Bottles are plucked from across the world, including a number of countries and regions you don’t necessarily associate with wine culture. All the better for discovering you favourite new piquant. If all that sounds impressive, what truly sets Linden Stores aside is the personal service and intimate atmosphere, betraying just how much the owners care about what they’re plating and pouring, and the experience of every individual customer.
