Stockport may have been named the ‘best place to live in the North West’, but it wouldn’t change its pervading attitude. A place where people call a spade a spade, or a plant shop, err, Plant Shop. Situated in the heart of Old Town, this emporium of greenery is one of many hidden gems waiting to be discovered in and around the cobbled streets and alleys. It also has a particularly personal story behind it, and one which is bound to make customers fall even deeper in love with the store than they already were.

It all began with a trip to Melbourne, Australia, in 2016. A much more outdoors-y city compared to Manchester, the idea struck to bring a little of the Antipodean vibe back to England’s North West, taking inspiration from the abundance of amazing plant nurseries Down Under. Soon, 100 mini cacti were put up for sale outside an unassuming office building, and trade started to grow. Skip ahead a few years, and Plant Shop was born — an independent brick and mortar store that has blossomed from those humble beginnings.

“Indoor houseplants are part of the furniture,” the team explain. “When finding plants for the shop, we select reliable classics alongside more rare and unusual plants that make collecting houseplants so fun. We also stock decorative pots, plant care essentials, and accessories to help your plants thrive. New to plants? Our small team are always more than happy to help you make the best choice for your space, and assist with aftercare to keep plants flourishing.” Also trading online, with delivery across Greater Manchester postcodes, in addition to standard sales, Plant Shop does bulk corporate gifting, rentals for businesses and events, and you can catch these horticultural experts at pop-ups across the region. Finally, if you’re heading to the store don’t forget to check the sister shop upstairs. Rare Finds is known for amazing second-hand furniture, homeware, decor, and nomadic monthly flea markets, although that’s another story.
