To say we once had a great time at The Goods In would be an understatement. We’ve been more than once for a start. Situated in the centre of Prestwich, within walking distance to local Metrolink services and this upmarket urban village’s abundant drinking and eating spots, this small DIY-style bar, cafe and event space is a great shout if you’re exploring North Manchester. And there’s plenty to take in nearby, including the vast expanse of Heaton Park, currently Europe’s largest municipal green space which has, among other things, a plethora of historic houses and follies to visit, a heritage rail service, which runs seasonally, and some of the best views back to the city itself.
As for The Goods In, it’s quite hard not to feel charmed by the setup. Directly over the road from Heaton Park tram stop, as the name suggests the building was once used as storage for various produce when our hometown was an industrial powerhouse. This lends the place a small warehouse-y feel, which has been overhauled via a bright paint job. Most of the exterior dons sunshine yellow, pockmarked with other tones, with similarly creative touches applied to the roller shutter door marking the entrance. Seating is available outside in the courtyard, which is excellent in warmer months, and in various sections that make up the interior, with multi-coloured pop up chairs in abundance.
Run by the same crew as nearby institution All The Shapes, The Goods In does a roaring trade in booze, including high quality spirits, local and craft beers, alongside wines, non-alcoholic alternatives and straight up soft drinks. For food, guest chefs are invited and work on rotation. And the menus focus on classic brunch options and healthy, or healthier, lunch dishes edging towards Middle Eastern and North African favourites, although this changes depending on the talent drafted for service. Finally, this is a popular event space, both for private and open entry, so you can easily find top shelf tunes from quality DJs here well past midnight, if you time the visit right.
