If you’re new to Manchester then Mother Macs probably won’t mean much. A traditional pub born in the middle of the Victorian era, between the 1870s and early 2020s it did a roaring trade in a number of things. Beer, of course, was one of those things. In later years, it also peddled its dark, macabre history, which saw a one-time landlord do away with his family and then try and torch the place down. Making no effort to hide this — a plaque was placed outside the front door, newspaper clippings hung on the walls — it was often regarded as one of the most unique places to come for a drink in the city centre.
As of 2024 all that changed, except for the inimitable look and feel of 3 Back Piccadilly. Investing heavily in restoring some of the building’s best bits, The Rat & Pigeon was born. Split over three floors, although only the ground level is open at quieter times, you’ll immediately notice an antiquated flavour that defines the look and feel. Beautiful tiles and woodwork set the tone, while the bar itself boasts three taps and pumps, with two of these changing regularly.
The point being — this is a place for beer lovers. Hence you’ll find it listed as one of CAMRA’s recommended watering holes. That’s the Campaign For Real Ale, which ranks boozers based on the hops they sell and how well preserved their interiors are. Upstairs, you’ll find a small stage and projector which is used to show live sports. And even if nothing is on the screen, Wednesdays are always popular here, when the Rat & Pigeon hosts live bands and DJs though to 1am with no entrance charge. You’ll find a similar deal one Monday per month, too, with a jazz, soul and funk night drawing crowds in.
