There’s a reason Worsley looks the way it does today. Between the 14th and 20th Century, most of this was fields and collieries, and the town’s affluent aesthetics largely stem from the wealth generated by the mining industry. These days, all that has gone, and most people associate this northwestern corner of Greater Manchester with woodland walks and a laidback vibe. Not to mention great pub lunches and proper British pints. Both of which you’ll find at The Woodside.

With roots in the 19th Century, the building itself was a private house occupied by managers of the aforementioned collieries. An impressive place to live, today the address has been sympathetically converted into a landmark public house known for a warm welcome, quality drinks and great food. Located a short walk from Worsley Old Hall and its grounds, and not too far from the stunning RHS Garden Bridgewater, it has the charm and atmosphere of a country inn, while the menu is very much modern Manchester.

So think seasonal flavours with an eye for fusion dishes, running the spectrum between Far Eastern and South Asian, contemporary British and European. Most options are available Monday through Saturday, with a separate selection of dishes served on Sundays. No prizes for guessing how good the traditional roast dinner is here, which is definitely the star of the show on the last day of each week. Alongside a great selection of cask ales and craft beers to wash down the food, The Woodside’s team are well known for their cocktail prowess, so if you’re looking for sophisticated pours you should definitely stop by. The wine list is also enviable, covering the breadth of both Old and New World varieties. Oh, and there’s also a dedicated children’s menu and a number of promotions on specific nights, offering excellent value.
