“When I see the colours, light and shapes…the city of Manchester comes to life.”
Friday 28th October sees the welcome return of Dave Coulter to the Zion Arts Centre. After his amazingly successful first exhibition, 3/4 of a Mile” in 2010, Dave is returning to his natural home in Hulme to share his new work in an exhibition entitled “A Brush with Life”.

Dave Coulter will be returning with a new selection of paintings capturing Manchester in all its industrial beauty following the success of his first exhibition after he was discovered by a local policeman. After receiving national coverage for his work and a profile which has allowed him to open his own gallery, Zion Arts Centre is happy to also welcome him to his new position as Zion’s first Artist in Residence for the next twelve months.

Dave, who hails from the Hulme area, shares the Zion’s ethos of inspiring creativity in young people and as part of his residency will be working with the young people of Zion for the next year. This work has already started and attending his preview on Friday night will be students from Trafford College’s Film and Media course along with their tutor Stuart Drummond who are creating the Zion’s Artist in Residence website and working with directly with Dave to document his work at Zion, starting with “A Brush with Life”.

Stuart commented, “It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be working with a real artist on a real project for the Zion Arts Centre and to be so central to documenting the first artist in residence. It gives the students fantastic experience and they have really connected with Dave.”

Dave Coulter shared this sentiment. “Painting is my life blood, coursing through me. When I see the colours, light and shapes, the city of Manchester comes to life. I love Manchester. I have seen the dark and light of the city; the austerity of the 1950’s, like a dirty old overcoat, and now the clean light and liberty that the new Manchester has brought to people eyes. I love working with the students and young people, sharing my experiences of living in this city, my love of art and hopefully inspiring them to capture and recreate the Manchester of tomorrow.

Dave’s exhibition “A Brush with Life” will be opening on Friday 28th October from 6pm and will continue until Saturday 10th December. Dave will be available to meet on both these dates and would welcome people to come along and discuss his paintings, remember the Manchester of yesterday and imagine the Manchester of tomorrow.

The exhibition will be open 5pm-9pm weekdays and 10am-4pm Saturdays – for more information contact 0161 226 1912.
