Through a series of exhibitions, commissions and events, NOW explores how the diversity of current female artistic practice transcends notions of gender difference to offer hybrid perspectives on their socio-political environment.
This collaborative programme includes exhibitions at Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art and an artist film series at HOME as well as other locations across the UK.
The variety of artwork exhibited across the collaborative programme reflects the many viewpoints of artists in the wake of feminist movements of the past and considers how the rapid transformations of contemporary China have provided new opportunities and possibilities for female artists to take advantage of transcultural opportunities.
New works exhibited include ‘Floating Narratives’ a sculptural installation piece in mixed media from artist Na Buqi (b.1984) and a series of new paintings from Li Shurui (b. 1981), both of which can be seen at Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in Manchester (CFCCA). CFCCA’s exhibition will also be the first UK showcase of video installations from Hu Xiaoyuan (b. 1989), Luo Wei (b. 1989) and Wu Chao (b. 1977), as well as film and animation work from Yang Guangnan (b. 1980) and Geng Xue (b. 1983)
HOME will be screening a two-part moving image programme addressing notions of modernity, tradition and technique. The programme incorporates performance, pen and ink animation, stop-motion, moving portrait and photographic techniques, blind audio, new media art and experimental digital SFX, documentary and archive footage and features work from Hao Jingban (b. 1985), Shiyuan Liu (b. 1985), Wang NewOne (b. TBC), Yao Qingmei (b. 1982), Ma Qiusha (b. 1982), Liu Yi (b. 1981), Chi Jang Yin (b. 1973), Miao Ying (b. 1985), Liang Yue (b. 1979), Peng Yun (b. 1982), Guan Xiao (b. 1983), Hu Xiaoyuan (b.1977), Wang Xin (1983) and Geng Xue (b. 1983).
NOW is co-organised by Plus Tate, the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in collaboration with HOME, Manchester; Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art; Nottingham Contemporary and Turner Contemporary, Margate.
