What’s Bertha? Who is Bertha? Where is Bertha? The answer to all these questions can be found in one of the city’s coolest central hangout spots. By all accounts Stevenson Square is now ground zero for Northern Quarter chic in the mid-21st Century. Once all-but-derelict, if you can remember that far back you’ll also recall the first time you saw the area teeming with life. The transition is incredible. Home to art supply shops (to be fair, that’s been here for over 100 years), record stores, magazine outlets and lots of colourful street art, it’s here we track down the legendary Bertha at their headquarters, Get Baked.
For the uninitiated, Bertha is as serious as sweet things get. A 24-layer — yes, 24 — Bruce cake which has been one of our hometown’s biggest guilty pleasure viral sensations of the past few years. Bertha has become such an infamous treat the kitchen at Get Baked regularly runs dry of the ingredients to make it, and you can even sign up for email alerts letting you know when to head this decadent creation is available again. Fear not, though, this is one of Central Manchester’s strongest sugar-coated bakeries and that means even when the star of the show is out, you’ll always find something delightful to indulge in.
Brownies are a big sell everywhere, but at Get Baked they really mean business. Beyond these iconic staples, you’ll also find a broad selection of classic cookies, a full heat at home range, and at the time of writing the latest collaborative collection of merch involved legendary illustrator Chris (Simpsons Artist) – a pop culture hero to say the least. Complete with their own GB Recipe Book and a strong line in tasty wearables, the food and products here are truly incredible and the branding utterly inimitable.
