Beyond The Music has rolled into Manchester, with a host of parties, gigs and other events going on around the music conference programme at venues all across the city.
These are Finest’s pick of a sprawling bunch, from cosmic soul to psych-folk. Keep scrolling for a full round-up of every single gig that’s going on all over town this week.
Get ready…
OneDa at 33 Oldham Street
Friday 13 October
10.30pm
The unequalled OneDa is poised to release her debut album on the iconic Heavenly label, a culmination of her career so far – of trials, tribulations, highs and lows – but all these things have made her who she is; a scorching talent, an inspiring ambassador for the city and role model for all those coming through. All hail the queen.
33 Oldham St, Manchester M1 1JG
Cooper T at Disorder
Friday 13 October
7.30pm
Kong and TMNMS – the balaclava-ed, tracky-wearing, chain-rocking duo behind Cooper T – will be bringing their distinctly Mancunian mash-up of everything from post-punk riffs to mucky hip hop to Ian Dury-esque urban observations to Beyond The Music. Whether it’s ready for the rowdiness is very much another matter.
78-88 High St, Manchester M4 1ES
Red Laser at Band On The Wall
Friday 13 October
10pm
The exceptional Red Laser Disco will be taking over the Band On The Wall with some powerful Mancunian-Italo, dark disco, house, electro and techno vibrations, with boss man Il Bosco joined by some big hitters. Hysteric will be playing live, alongside Starion and Tommy Walker 3, and regular co-pilot Pharaoh Brunson. Strap in.
25 Swan St, Manchester M4 5JZ
Just Banco at Disorder
Saturday 14 October
9.30pm
It’s the return of the Manc. Just Banco will be tearing up Disorder with his auto-tune heavy ‘trapanese’ bangers, off the back of his Never Enough mixtape, which dropped over the summer, a suite of moody street poetry with basslines that will rattle your fillings.
78-88 High St, Manchester M4 1ES
Bay Bryan at Night & Day
Saturday 14 October
2.30pm
Originally from the parish of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Bay Bryan has made the Rainy City his home, and since releasing his debut album The Meadow, Bay has attracted the attention of everyone from Luke Una to Mark Radcliffe to Sprechen Music with his alt-folk vibes. See him in somewhere intimate like Night & Day while you still can.
26 Oldham St, Manchester M1 1JN
Ellen Beth Abdi at the Peer Hat
Saturday 14 October
8pm
A stunning talent, Manchester’s Ellen Beth Abdi is mesmerising on stage, looping up beats and musical phrases on the fly, before threading it all together with a voice that will melt your very soul. After collabs with the likes of A Certain Ratio and even a support slot with the Stone Roses, huge things surely lie just around the corner.
14-16 Faraday St, Manchester M1 1BE
The KTNA at Band On The Wall
Saturday 14 October
7pm
Kenyan-born, Manchester-raised sisters Hope and Millie Katana (aka the Sisterz of Darkness) will be bringing their cosmic soul to the Band on the Wall in a day of shows curated by SXSW.
25 Swan St, Manchester M4 5JZ
Tays at Night & Day
14-16 Faraday St, Manchester M1 1BE
Saturday 14 October
9.30pm
Tays, aka rising North Manchester MC Mikey Taylor, has the world at his feet. Protégé of Aitch, there won’t be many more opportunities left to see him at a venue this size, having already supported his mentor in front of some serious audiences. Don’t sleep on this one.
26 Oldham St, Manchester M1 1JN
Mother Sky at Aatma
Saturday 14 October
3.30pm
Named after the seminal track by Krautrock icons Can, Mother Sky are less about the angular teutonic noise of their namesakes and more about the psychedelic astral folk, brooding pastoral soundscapes and echoes of the majestic Mazzy Star. Be in awe of the wild skill on stage from this four-piece drawn from the four corners of the UK.
1st Floor, 14-16 Faraday St, Manchester M1 1BE
Hit & Run at Band On The Wall
Saturday 14 October
11pm
The Hit & Run crew have brought out the big guns here. Jungle and drum & bass legend Doc Scott will be joining the Manchester breakbeat stalwarts, hooking up with MC Fox on the mic. Joining him will be Sl8r, back to back with Chimpo and Chunky, Yan and, of course, Hit & Run’s Rich Reason himself.
25 Swan St, Manchester M4 5JZ
High Hoops and Meat Free vs The Face in a car park
Saturday 14 October
From 4.30pm to 11pm
This final rave-up will close proceedings at Beyond The Music in fine style. Taking over the multi-storey car park just by the Millstone, this none-more-urban location will play host to sets from FastLove from High Hoops, Meat Free’s AALICE, Tom Boogizm, Finn and Anz.
The Northern Quarter Car Park, Church St, Manchester M4 1LX
