Founded by coffee enthusiasts, for coffee enthusiasts, Fort Coffee is committed to serving cups of Joe as they should be, no matter how you prefer your java to be brewed. Situated on the ever-bustling thoroughfare of Deansgate, considered by many to be the real epicentre of Manchester, the intimate cafe has a minimalist interior aesthetic, simple whitewash contrasting a single wall of eye-catching dark blue-grey, with light, natural woods adding to the tone.

Suffice to say, then, the idea is to let the produce do most of the talking, and from our experience there’s plenty to say. Every aspect of the coffee making process is taken into full consideration here, and that starts with remineralising the water, replenishing it with vital nutrients that are not only healthier for you, but also add depth. Dosage, yield, temperature control, pressure profiling — all these differentiating factors are understood by the staff, including extraction percentages which are judged using a refractometer, ensuring consistency of flavour each time you visit.

Coffees themselves are separated into different categories, ranging from Familiar to Fruity, and then Funky. Meanwhile, those looking for something more extravagant can opt for a Pour Over, and there are a number of choices offered — Yuzu Plum using Finca El Paraïso beans, The Alchemist, where Gasharu Farms, Rwanda supply the coffee, and added extras accentuate ripe tropical flavours. Drinks aside, organic, sustainably sourced brunch dishes are available, with the menu regularly changing to reflect the availability of seasonal ingredients. For example, Celeriac, Leek, Kale, Soft Boiled Egg and Mustard Roast Ham, Leek & Potato Quiche, or doorstep-worthy sandwiches made with the freshest possible loafs and packed with roasted vegetables. Sweet treats aren’t far away, either, such as Blood Orange Meringue, Sticky Ginger Cake, and Chocolate & Beetroot Cake, if you want delectable delicacies made from pure goodness, with love.
