Pretty much every Irish bar in the city claims to serve the best pint of Guinness. The difference with Kennedy’s Irish Bar is that they might actually be telling the truth. An Altrincham institution known for its music as much as the beer and food, this spot began in 2021 during a difficult time for the pub trade and has not only thrived but expanded since then. Circa 2023, the team took over the place next door, doubling the establishment’s size, introducing an Irish delicatessen selling quality produce shipped from great suppliers on the Emerald Isle, and opened an AirB&B above the boozer for those who want to stay.
Standing on what some in the neighbourhood have started referring to as “Kennedy’s Corner”, Kennedy’s Irish Bar has a number of special promotions each week. Summer Spritz are two for £12 from Monday to Thursday, during warmer months at least, while lunchtime deals run on Thursday and Friday afternoons, details vary depending on the menu that day. Thursdays mean Wing Night, Friday Fizz prices bottles of bubbly at £18 until 8PM, and come Saturday morning you can gab a breakfast bap and beer for only £8 until 1pm. Talk about guilty pleasures.
More than the kitchen — which is open 12pm to 8pm Thursday to Sunday — Kennedy’s is renowned for its live bands and acts, with music ruling this roost on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Expect to see multiple groups in one night and hear sounds from across a variety of genres, albeit mostly tied to that homeland across the Irish Sea. A real community spot, with 21-year-olds drinking next to folk in their 80s and 90s, 28-32 Greenwood Street is the definition of a proper pub with added bells and whistles, and in so many ways is just what Altrincham ordered.
