Don’t you love it when things cut to the chase? Google Public and three things come up: “Has outdoor seating. Serves great cocktails. Has dancing.” This Northern Quarter gem is found in one of the area’s busiest corners, Stevenson Square, which has evolved from half-derelict concrete public space to a thriving destination attracting throngs of visitors each weekend. Come for record shops, come for art supplies, rare magazines, and books. Then once you’re done, come for excellent independent bars. This is one of the best.
White metal chairs with comfy cushions, cream tile-work, industrial piping overhead and hardwood floors. A place you want to spend time. Then you notice the excellent booth benches, which are yours to sink into providing you get here in time. The next thing to spot is the walls, which are adorned with work from local artists, giving a strong nod to the surrounding area’s status as a cultural and creative powerhouse for both Manchester and Northern England. Although on a sunny day you’ll probably be more tempted by the generous outdoor seating in the square outside, which is party time from early afternoon in peak summer and on Bank Holidays.
Run by the team behind nearby Evelyn’s and The Daisy, both also worth a look, expect a couple of things. First and foremost, the cocktails are great, with a penchant for Margs alongside a number of other timeless classics. All available with or without some modern twists. Meanwhile, the food is also high standard, and given where you are in town it’s well all priced. Many dishes are something of an homage to Chinatown, or rather Chinatowns across the world, combining Far Eastern flavours with more Western and North American influences. In short: definitely one to try while you’re getting lost in our favourite city centre district.
