South Manchester is a sprawling expanse of suburbs. And it feels all the bigger thanks to the topography. Pancake flat for the most part — the beginning of the Cheshire Plain — despite the lack of geographical differentiation the districts down here can vary wildly. The Didsburys sit at the upper end of the market, with West and its tree-lined streets arguably the prettiest. Think abundant cafes, independent shops and restaurants centred on and around the famous Burton Road.

The Metropolitan, a former mansion and Midland Hotel which was refurbished and redone at significant expense in 2008, is a major landmark. The building alone is worth a look, and can’t be missed if you’re passing through, occupying a prominent spot at the end of Lapwing Lane, in the middle of the action. It’s a huge red brick, black and white timber edifice that comes complete with its own stables. These have long since been converted into sheltered areas for the generously sized beer garden, which is a popular destination for drinkers in summer months. Inside is no quieter, and the smart money suggests this could be the busiest bar in the area.

The interior is clearly modernised but pays homage to the heritage aspect, and welcomes both the later night party crowd alongside families here for drinks and food. There are several menus, including evening and lunch, and the obligatory Sunday alternative, which is dominated by roasts ranging from pork loin to hand-carved turkey, cauliflower tart to sirloin of beef. Vegans and veggies are equally well-catered for throughout the week, as are non-gluten diners, and if you head back outside, where those horses used to be, there’s usually a wood-fired pizza oven doing its thing. All in all, a real South Manchester destination boozer which is very much part of the fabric of the neighbourhood.
