Suggested By You: The community local in Ramsbottom where the roast gravy never stops flowing

Seriously, the gravy at the Holcombe Tap is bottomless...

Ramsbottom’s Holcombe Tap is a jewel of a local. Much like its sister pub the Eagle and Child up the road, it’s cemented its place in the local community, and become a destination for folk seeking a great roast and a warm welcome.

But it’s not just about the Sunday lunch fare. They do a cracking flat iron steak, a selection of belting small plates and when they took Asian-inspired broccoli off the menu a while back, there was a full scale outcry.

There’s a solid range of cocktails to be had too, and in the event you are there on a Sunday, the gravy is a bottomless affair.

And if that’s not enough to drag you there, then we don’t know what is.

Run by Bill Gallie and his sons Will and Jacob, who took over the place in 2018, this award-winning boozer does all the usual pub stuff – the open fires, the roasts, the traditional decor, the cosy lounge and lively bar areas – but with little twists to make it their own.

On the wall, there’s a section of the desk that dad Bill sat behind when he was a food tech teacher, and which was gifted to him when he left. The bannister is a vintage measuring rule, which is there to grip onto as you climb the stairs.

Food is where Holcombe Tap really earns its reputation. The kitchen works a small‑plate menu that shifts with the seasons but leans on local produce and bold flavours. Try the hash brown bites with parmesan and truffle – Jacob’s favourite – essentially pub comfort food dialled up to luxury.

Both disappear fast, and it’s easy to see why. The 5oz flat iron steak, served pink with peppercorn sauce and those locally‑made Bury black pudding bon bons, feels like the kind of dish designed to win over anyone still sceptical about small‑plates dining.

Whipped goat cheese, hot honey and pistachios, Indian-style fried chicken with curry sauce and a bistro-style juicy lamb rump with herb crumb. Everything is prepped in‑house, with meats from trusted local butchers and cheeses from Cheshire dairies, and it shows.

Sundays are a whole other story. Holcombe Tap’s take on the roast is a mix‑and‑match affair: you pick your meat – beef, lamb or pork – then build your own roast from a spread of sides, roasties, Yorkshire puddings and as much gravy as you can handle.

Cauliflower cheese is made fresh every week, there’s no skimping on portions, and the whole thing feels more pub than gastropub – hearty but unpretentious. The open fire roars, the courtyard garden is packed when the sun’s out, and by the time the live music starts, the place is bouncing.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Ramsbottom without good beer, and Holcombe Tap has that covered. Three rotating cask pumps, a Japanese lager that’s become a surprise hit, and a back bar stocked with 24 gins, a spritz menu, and a chocolate old fashioned that feels like it was made for cold nights by the fire.

It’s CAMRA‑accredited, members get a discount on pints, and there’s a casual, chat‑first service style that regulars love.

Holcombe Tap is the kind of pub that does a bit of everything, but somehow makes it all feel seamless. No wonder it’s become one of Ramsbottom’s best‑kept secrets. If you’re heading up that way, make sure to book ahead – especially on Sundays. That unlimited gravy draws a crowd.
