These days, most restaurants worth their salt are serving a veggie or vegan Sunday dinner, but that doesn’t mean they’re all created equal. Luckily, when it comes to vegetarian roasts, Manchester has some seriously noteworthy contenders.

From rooms above pubs in the suburbs, to sleek city centre dining rooms, here are the very best places to enjoy a vegetarian or vegan roast dinner in Manchester, complete with golden Yorkshires and extremely convincing gravies.

Whether you’re catching up with friends and family, or are seeking a comforting space to nurse your hangover, we’ve got you covered.

Albert’s Schloss

Sunday Service at Albert’s Schloss is a celebration of Bavarian-style eating, drinking and socialising, with a hearty slice of British stodge too. Their vegetarian roast dinner offering is their no-nut roast, served with all the necessary extras. Beers and cocktails can be as free-flowing as you want them. They’ve also got DJs and live music on all day, so if you want your Sunday afternoon to be a continuation of your Saturday night, Schloss provide the goods.

The Allotment

It’s no surprise that Manchester’s award-winning vegan restaurant, The Allotment, does an incredible vegan roast. We’d be pretty astonished if they didn’t. The centrepiece is a stuffed butternut squash surrounded by premium extras like rosemary roasties, chestnut and mushroom stuffing, glazed carrots and parsnips and an exceptional vegan gravy. If you’ve got room for dessert, there’s a whole raft of indulgent puds too. Plus, the views of Manchester Cathedral aren’t half bad either.

The Bay Horse Tavern

Northern Quarter’s version of an olde worlde boozer, The Bay Horse is a home away from home to cradle a well-deserved pint in. Roast-wise, they offer a roast cauliflower that comes with a giant Yorkshire pudding and all of the usual trimmings which you can supplement with things like camembert mash and even chips. The perfect Sunday afternoon sanctuary in the heart of the Northern Quarter.

Elnecot

Sunday roasts at Elnecot are served from midday until they run out, and you better believe that they do run out. The veggie option is a squash and nut roast that comes with roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, roasted carrots and parsnips, sautéed greens, cauliflower cheese and a properly rich gravy. This can also be made vegan when served without a Yorkshire pudding, supplemented with extra seasonal vegetables instead. If you’re looking for a Sunday afternoon with a generous helping of Ancoats sophistication, get yourself booked in.

Evelyn’s

Every Sunday from 12pm, Evelyn’s serves up their sumptuous vegan roast, which comes with roasted cauliflower and a vegan laksa gravy. They’ve also got an amazing menu offering alternative but extremely Sunday-friendly dishes like fish and chips and their signature cheeseburger.

Firehouse

Manchester’s very best cabaret roast can be found at Firehouse, where you’ll not only be treated to a banging oyster mushroom wellington – you’ll also get DJs, drag and catwalk performers too. They serve a great selection of sides too including leek and cauliflower cheese and the ever-important extra gravy.

Maray

Known for their Middle Eastern small plates and show-stopping mezze, Maray is great for veggies and vegans week-round. On a Sunday though, they go all out. Their chickpea nut roast is inflected with warming spices, and is served alongside crispy fenugreek potatoes, braised red cabbage and a butternut squash tershi dip, while the gravy and Yorkshires are reassuringly un-messed with. These guys are never not doing amazing things with cauliflower, so we’d recommend adding on that cauli cheese too.

Otto Vegan Empire

Middle Eastern vegan food, nestled away above a Stockport pub? Now you’re listening. Otto Vegan Empire is an evolution of The Ottö-Men, a popular Turkish spot that gained a following serving up veggie and vegan Turkish mezze from Stretford Foodhall. Having levelled up to their very own empire atop Bramhall’s Crown & Conspirator, their regular menu is all about mezze dishes, falafel, kofta and the like. On Sundays though their approach translates to a really satisfying roast dinner with vegan Yorkshires and a properly rich gravy. Your Sunday lunch followed by sweet, vegan baklava? We simply cannot and will not argue with that.

Reddish Ale

Reddish boozer Reddish Ale does lots of things really well. There’s a well-stocked craft beer offering, really well executed bar snacks and pub grub, DJ nights and just all-round exceptional community vibes. The type of place you walk into and are immediately part of a conversation that encompasses the whole bar. On their ‘Soft Sundays’ (named for the warm, fuzzy feel and short-but-sweet opening hours) are all about the roast dinners, the vegan version of which is really, really good. They start serving from 2pm, it’s walk-ins only, and we’d recommend not waiting around.

The Refuge

The Refuge serves an exquisite vegan roast – a vegan wellington with roasted celeriac, duxelles and other tempting bits and bobs. You can make a whole afternoon of it with picture-perfect starters like goats cheese with beets and nostalgic desserts like apple strudel. And while you happen to be in one of the city centre’s most glamorous drinking spots, it’d be rude not to have a cocktail or two.

TNQ

TNQ has been keeping the bellies of Northern Quarter trendies full on Sundays for some time now, and their veggie option does not disappoint. Try a pumpkin, kale and mushroom wellington with chestnuts and the sides are phenomenal, too – with your plate coming loaded with garlic roasted potatoes, honey glazed parsnips, carrot and swede mash, buttered cabbage and a Yorkshire pud. There are loads of posh extras to add too like buttered greens, and their take on a bloody mary. No wonder they’ve won loads of national awards for their Sunday lunches.

Trof

Trof has been bashing out epic Sunday roasts for over a decade, and it is safe to say that they have truly mastered the craft. The veggie option changes regularly, but you can always be assured that it will be something decent. All the options are served with seasonal veg, proper roast potatoes and really thick veggie gravy, which will have even the most avid meat eater converted. These babies fly out quickly, so make sure your lazy Sunday morning isn’t too lazy.
