This month’s bountiful new openings span taprooms, brunch spots and champagne-adjacent tasting menus.
Mexican food fans can enjoy tacos, margaritas and green chilli smash burgers in the Thomas Street sunshine, meanwhile there are two exciting new openings at the Treehouse Hotel.
A Sicilian sandwich spot graduates from a shipping container to a bricks and mortar deli, and Korean street food comes to the Trafford Centre.
Here are the best openings in Manchester this month…
The Abbey – Open 12 June
Leading gig promoters Now Wave are reopening the long-shuttered The Old Abbey Taphouse as The Abbey, bringing together a traditional neighbourhood local and a grassroots music venue. Built in 1890, the pub is an important part of Hulme’s history and was the site of Len Johnson’s anti-racism protests that helped end Manchester’s discriminatory ‘colour bar’ policies in the 1950s. Live shows are already booked in from Divorce, Les Big Bird and Born At Midnight. With a sprawling outdoor space, it’s great news for Hulme locals, Science Park workers and students alike.
Bruncho Northern Quarter – Opening soon
The original site on Deansgate has been grappling with weekend brunch queues for some time now, so this new addition to the burgeoning empire will spread the load a little bit. It takes over the spot formerly Feel Good Club on Hilton Street.
Portfolio – Open now
After opening earlier in the year, new school Champagne bar Portfolio is launching its food concept in earnest. Chef Julian Pizer, of the Michelin-listed Another Hand, is behind it, with a tasting menu of ‘bites’ – a tasting menu of perfectly constructed and balanced single bites. You can go for 14 or 18 courses (or a pared down 10 courses for lunch), with additional Champagne and wine pairing.
Rita Rays – Opening soon
Named after owner Becky Brown’s grandparents – Rita and Ray – Rita Ray’s is a sports bar leaning into women’s focussed sports. A great idea, and a superb addition to Stockport’s blossoming bar scene, taking a spot on the new Weir Mill site on the river. Expect this to be the only place to be come the U20 Women’s World Cup come September.
The Nest – Opening soon
Perched atop Treehouse Hotel, The Nest is a fauna-filled rooftop bar curated by Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford, the team behind Volta, Electrik in Chorlton, Freight Island, The Refuge and, of course, seminal Manchester clubnight Electric Chair. There are sweeping skyline views and a changing cocktail menu, making a smart addition to Treehouse’s food and drink offering, which included Pip restaurant, and the newly-opened Sister Moon too.h
Bunsik Trafford Centre – Open now
Bunsik is the blue and yellow Korean street food spot you might have seen on Piccadilly Gardens. Now you can find them in the Trafford Centre too in – where else – the Orient food hall. Enjoy crispy Korean corn dogs with various fillings, rich and comforting tteokbokki and freshly prepared kimbap, all made fresh. It’s all part of a broader foodie overhaul at the Trafford Centre, alongside the likes of like Blanchflower, Hello Oriental, and Dave’s Hot Chicken.
Marleo Northern Quarter
This Sicilian deli started out life in a shipping container in Pollard Yard, and now they’ve graduated to a bricks and mortar spot on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter. Their entire offering is a delight, from focaccia sandwiches to arancini, to more specialty bites like stuffed ravazzo buns via individual pizzette and desserts too. They’re obsessive about ingredient quality, so you’re in for a treat.
Gooey Oxford Road – Open now
You know them already for their outrageous donuts, perfect cuboid French toast, celebrity fans and perma-queues, but now Gooey have attempted to meet the overwhelming demand for their brunches and baked goods by opening a second city centre cafe, this time on Circle Square on Oxford Road. We think it’ll be popular…
Pigeon Beer Wanderer – Open 4 June
Another addition to the so-called ‘Beer-muda Triangle’ – the cluster of independent brewery taprooms behind Piccadilly Station – Pigeon Beer Wanderer opens this month. It’s a “a specialist beer parlour, wine store and outdoor drinks terrace”, and you can find them under a railway arch on Sheffield Street.
Cantina at Cane & Grain – Open now
Just in time for summer, Cane & Grain has had a menu revamp. The Thomas Street destination has pivoted to all things Mexican and sunsoaked. There’s five different types of tacos, as well as, loaded fries, Texas toast sandwiches, green chilli smash burgers, homemade salsas and more. There’s also a brand new tequila-based cocktail menu and Mexican lager on draught or by the bottle, served with a wedge of lime of course.
The Cat Cafe
The Cat Cafe is back in Manchester. Now located in Barton Arcade (it was originally in the Northern Quarter) it is exactly what it sounds like: a cafe filled with cats. Enjoy hot drinks, baked goods, toasties and more while surrounded by felines of all kinds. The organisers say they hope to create “relaxing spaces in what can be a busy, crowded and over stimulating world”, while they donate half of all profits to local cat shelters.
UNITOM St John’s – Open now
Northern Quarter favourite UNITOM is opening a second city-centre site at St John’s, combining a curated bookshop and coffee kiosk with a brand-new exhibition space dedicated to contemporary visual culture. Alongside books, magazines and Dark Arts coffee, the new venue will support emerging Manchester artists through a programme of rotating exhibitions, launching with Goof City by Manchester School of Art graduate Mary Lou Lawless-Gill.
Ranny’s – Open now
Ranny’s is new coffee shop for Stockport, and this one is for all the mid-century modern lovers. Opened by Rhianne, who has been a mainstay on the SK1 hospitality scene for years, this cute and cosy spot has opened on Hempshaw Lane in the Offerton area. Pop down for great coffee, fresh bakes and plenty of interior decor inspiration.
Onsite Records – Opening soon
Onsite Records is preparing to open its doors in the Northern Quarter this month, bringing coffee, wine, records and art together under one roof on Newton Street. Designed by Taking Shape – who specialise in DJ booths and live music stages – the new venue will be a place to browse, discover and spend time.
